Yes. Bee products are naturally gluten-free, and the other raw materials we use in our products are gluten-free as well.

Other than those that come from the bees themselves, our products do not contain any animal-derived ingredients. They are prepared with completely herbal and vegan ingredients.

The MGO rating system is based on the scientific evidence revealed in 2008 by Professor Thomas Henle. It enables our customers to make informed choices about the potency of honey they're buying. Not all mānuka honey is equal - it is important to know that the level of methylglyoxal can vary greatly in mānuka honey, so you want to be sure you get what you've paid for. That is why Mānuka Health test and certify every batch of MGO mānuka honey to guarantee the level of methylglyoxal present, as indicated by the MGO rating on the label. Each batch also undergoes stringent quality testing and is fully traceable right back to the beekeeper it came from. We developed the MGO rating and quality system based on the scientific evidence revealed in 2008 by Professor Thomas Henle and his research group (Technical University of Dresden, Germany) which identified methylglyoxal (MGO) as one of the key compounds found in New Zealand mānuka honey. The MGO mānuka honey rating and quality system mean our customers can easily make an informed choice of the potency of the honey they're buying. The higher the MGO rating, the higher the grade of honey.

Our stringent testing programme has four components:

• It confirms authenticity based on New Zealand’s scientific definition (MPI)

• It confirms potency (including efficacy, grading & MGO rating)

• It confirms purity, quality & food safety, with each batch issued a Certificate of Analysis (CoA) document which confirms the product meets specifications.

TEST FOR AUTHENTICITY

• All exported New Zealand mānuka honey must meet a Government-established scientific definition. The definition specifies a set of five science-based markers, which identify the origin of the mānuka honey. To be credibly called New Zealand mānuka honey, these markers must be present. Only mānuka honey that meets these standards will be certified for export as New Zealand mānuka honey.

TEST FOR POTENCY

• Our lead test for potency is for the compound methylglyoxal (MGO). After years of research, scientists discovered MGO as the key compound behind mānuka honey’s miraculous properties. Mānuka Health then pioneered the MGO rating, as a way of providing consumers assurance of the quality of our mānuka honey. Over the past decade, we have built MGO into an internationally recognized guide. Helping consumers all over the world purchase mānuka honey with confidence. UMF is another commonly relied upon grading system for mānuka honey, which also measures methylglyoxal as one of its compounds.

PURITY, QUALITY & FOOD SAFETY

• These are tests for contamination, toxins, adulteration, heat damage and freshness.

• Here in Te Awamutu, New Zealand, we have one of the largest customized honey facilities in the world. It includes an ISO17025 accredited laboratory, honey-drum storage, blending, packing and distribution, all combined under one roof. This means we can ensure a secure supply chain, from the beekeeper all the way to the finished product.

• We rigorously test the authenticity and quality of our mānuka honey, both when it’s fresh from the hive and when it’s finished and ready to be enjoyed. This is all part of guaranteeing quality, purity and safety.
